Since 1938, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been one of South Dakota’s best-known annual events. Indeed, Sturgis is the largest motorcycle rally in the world, with official attendance peaking at around 739,000 in 2015. In more recent years those numbers have come down somewhat, but even the most recent rally, held from August 7 to 16, 2025, logged over 537,000 vehicles entering Sturgis, according to official figures compiled by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. This actually represented an increase of about 11 percent over the vehicles logged at the 2024 rally.

At Least Six Dead in Motorcycle Accidents

Unfortunately, the increase in attendance corresponded with an increase in motorcycle accidents. South Dakota Searchlight reported:

The overall number of traffic accidents reported by the [South Dakota] Highway Patrol in the Sturgis and Rapid City areas during the rally was 93, only four more than last year, but the number of injury accidents increased from 35 to 66, while the number of non-injury accidents fell from 54 to 27. There were at least six reported fatalities among these accidents.
